For this, the first newsletter of the New Year 2015, I’ve decided to try a Blog format. I do this primarily so we can include more interactive things you can link directly to more information. The blog will be public. In an attempt to keep our private lives somewhat private, I will not include phone numbers or addresses in Blog articles for individuals. Businesses will continue to have both published. We all have access to the online directory and if I remove a phone number, I’ll try to add a link to help you look it up on the web site. If you don’t mind having that information published, please let me know when you send me an article. If you subscribe to the posts (right over there-->), you will get a feed automatically. new board and members of our guild for the next year. As artists inspiring
artists, we are a very unique organization full of creative women and men who
are as diverse in their media as their skill levels. We help each other develop

am very committed to contributing my time and resources to a very active year
in the Tampa Bay Surface Design Guild. I’m hoping that my previous experience
as president of other organizations, which gave me a wide range of skills, will
assist all of you in a smooth year.
I
am very open to all ideas, more enrichment through classes and mini workshops,
more show and tell, more challenges that will push us individually, and more
art installations that show the community our diverse talent. My hope is that
each member will participate in some way to help all of us develop ourselves as
artists. I look forward to getting to know each one of you this coming year."

- At our January meeting (Jan 12th), our mini workshop is brought to us by Alena Hennessy, artist and author or The Painting Workbook and Cultivating Your Creative Life. She will lead a quick painting demo and talk about the intuitive process of art-making and forming an abundant art career. She will also lead a quick creative exercise for the group. She is also the niece of Ann Thomas, our guild treasurer. Remember the second Monday sneaks up on us quickly this month so mark your calendar now.
- At our February Meeting, Gail Crotty will lead mini-workshop. She sent the following writeup for us.
Did you love opening a new box of “Crayola Crayons”? When I was a kid I think the number of crayons in the box was 12 and later if you were lucky it was 24. Now it is a box filled with 120 delightful colors. One constant though is that smell when you open the new box. I think it unleashes enjoyable memories of childhood.
In this mini workshop you will learn how you can to “paint/color” your quilt with melted crayons and prismacolor pencils. For me it has become a fun new technique to add to my “art quilt toolbox” and I hope for you it will be a fun new mixed medium trick to learn. The mini workshop will include a demonstration of the technique, a handout and a list of support resources. You may want to stay in the lines, but the original drawing is completely up to you.

- Sara King, sent this note to the group asking for support for her endeavors this year.
"This year I am going to sew quilts for
children in foster care every Monday at my apt party room in Clearwater. I
would love to have you join me. But, if
you can't, I will bring fabric to the meeting and you might want to take it
home and cut it into 5 1/2" strips or sew the strips together. Any help would be appreciated. I have the fabric, I just need helpers. Contact Sara King for more information."

Tampa Bay Surface Design Guild Workshops
are held on the third Sunday of the month at the Indian Rocks Beach Art Center
(unless otherwise announced). Please be sure to pay for a workshop on the day
that you sign up. Pay by cash or check made out to the Surface Design Guild. Workshops
are available to paid SDG members only and one-time visitors accompanied by a
member for an additional $15.
January 18 – Dorothy Boynton/Paper Maché Trees; Learn how to make trees from brown paper bags and rocks; the workshop has room for 20 students; 1:00-4:00 p.m. at IRBAC; $25 includes fee for art center. All supplies will be provided.
February 14-16 - Kim Sherrod/Cut Up Your Closet II; Learn to repurpose items in your closet or from thrift stores to make a spectacular new dress or skirt. Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the IRBAC. Monday the class will meet at Jay’s Fabrics from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. $75 covers all three days including art center fees. There is a maximum of 15 people for this class.

Let’s Scrumble! Create motifs using free form crochet. Every
Wednesday, January 7th, 14th, 21st at 10:00 AM-NOON. Learn new motifs each
week to assemble into a bag, a hat, or a cushion. FEE: $20 per session.

Tri-Loom Weaving - Continuous Strand
Method.
Introduction
to an ancient weaving method of using a single ball of yarn on a 2-ft. loom or
7-ft adjustable loom. Classes taught by appointment. FEES: One day (6 hours) - $90 per class plus
yarn supply. Two day (12 hours) - $170 per class. Loom Rental is $20 which can
be applied toward purchase of loom.
Cricket Loom Weaving - Warp and Weft
Method. Introduction to how to warp a
loom and to learn basic weaving skills on a 15-inch Schacht Cricket Loom.
(rigid and variable heddles). Weave a gorgeous scarf using Mango Moon yarns or
choose from any of our novelty yarns. Class by appointment.
Get Spinning! Learn the basics of
spinning fiber into novelty yarns. Start by carding multiple colors of roving
together on our drum carder. Next, spin yards of luscious yarn and ply it with
a selection of beads. FEES: Two-days (6
hours). $70 + supplies. Spinning Wheel Rental is $20, which can be
applied toward purchase of wheel. Class by appointment.
Public Service: We are starting a Chemo and Preemie Hat Group
as a service to our community. Thursdays, beginning January 8th at 10 AM. We're
are looking for volunteers to knit or crochet hats and hope you will consider
donating supplies of soft, light-weight yarns.

is located at 11630 Hamlin Blvd., #103, Largo;in the
Starlite Mobile Home Park, opposite the silver Airstream trailer.
