Yes, that is my arm being swallowed by a Tarpon. I think
what I enjoy the most about TBSDG are all the friendships I’ve made. With so
many different members, we are up to 89 now, I’ve gotten to know the artists
and the body of work they do. I’ve gotten to visit studios that are creative
and inspiring. But, the greatest joy has been participation in play days. These
little groups of artists set up a theme day or purpose, work in a studio or a
business, meet and create. In August, I met with three different groups
creating mixed media, sewing, and felting. It’s so much fun to collaborate or
inspire each other with our work, critique and encourage. Maybe, you can form
your own play days and post them on our Facebook or Website Page. We are having
two Guild play days in September, I hope you can come and join in the fun.

Sale
Please keep bringing art related books and magazines for the monthly book sale. Books sell for one dollar and magazines are 50 cents. This is a good way to increase our treasury if you're willing to donate your unwanted books to the Guild.
Any member wishing
to sell their artwork or art supplies; the table fee is $5. The room opens at 5:30 and the meeting starts
at 6:30. The meeting ends at 8:30 and we
must be out by 9:00.
Free Table
For some months now, Donna Isaac has been taking the
leftovers from the free table to use in craft projects for children where she
volunteers. She wants everyone to know
that she is not going to be at the September meeting. If you bring give-away things that are not
claimed by someone else, you must take the leftovers home in September. Once she returns, she will continue
harvesting things for this worthy cause.
Video Library
This month, we are taking donations of Art Related DVD's for
our new lending library. Each DVD can be loaned out for the month, then brought
back to the next Meeting. We are especially interested in instructional matter.
There will be a small rental fee to check them out. Kim Sherrod will be heading
up this project. It is very successful at the Sarasota Guild. More details will
follow.

In order to keep our dues from raising in January, we are
having a Holiday Ornament Fundraiser. DFAC is providing us with our own tree
for their Festival of Trees which runs from the last weekend in October thru
the end of December. The first weekend will be in conjunction with the Art
Harvest which draws in thousands. We are hoping to make 250 ornaments or
more, priced from $6-$15. So far, we
have a commitment of 100 ornaments. If you still want to make a prototype, send
a photo to Angelea Carpenter at DFAC. Her email address is
acarpenter1@knowlogy.net
We are having three play days to assemble our Holiday Ornaments
for the Dunedin Fine Art Center Christmas Trees.

Greeting Card Techniques
This Article on Greeting Cards Techniques is reprinted from
Marlene Glickman's Art Newsletter.
Collaged Snippets: Take snippets of fabric and collage them
together and fuse them to cardstock. If the collage is too thick to fuse, then
place a pressing paper (parchment) over the inside of the front of the card and
warm up the fusible from the back. I also do this method when I have a fat
collage and fuse from the backside. You can also take some hand stitches or
free motion and stitch the collage to the cardstock.
Left Overs From Workshops: Take pieces of fabric you have
dyed in workshops and cut it up for cards. You can fuse the whole piece or just
the top edge. If the fabric is sheer you can add foil underneath bonding the
foil to the paper cardstock with the tip of your iron, drawing the designs you
like.
Crazy Snippet Fabric (I call it Annie fabric because I
learned a similar method from Annie Wade but she skips the fusing parts and
just starts stitching fabric to a background fabric) Start fusing snippets to a
white cotton backing or ugly fabric you don’t like. Place the fabric on the
ironing board, using Steam a Seam 2 Lite or Misty Fuse (with a pressing sheet)
fuse to the background fabric. Peel back only a little of the paper or pressing
sheet and fuse your snippets. As you get more snippets, add them to the
fusible. Leave the parchment or pressing sheet on top to protect the fusible
from cat hairs, dust and lint (unless that is part of your design). If any of the fusible is showing through the
edges of the snippets, place a piece of foil over the top and then a pressing
sheet. Iron with medium heat for 8-12 seconds. Let it cool and peel off the
foil’s film. Wherever there is fusible between the snippets, there will now be
foil. If you need foil I recommend LauraMurrayDesigns.com for an assorted pack.
When all done with fusing and foiling, free motion the fabric. Cut out the
parts you like and make into greeting cards by fusing to cardstock.
Sign up on Marlene's web site (silkdyes.com) to get your own copy of her newsletter.
Many folks made significant progress with their bag (Bonnie
Ward, Carol Bickford and Sharon Appler's photos below). Hopefully, everyone has a finished product by
now that they should bring to the meeting.

Students may want to bring beads that can be tied on to dangling linen or hemp threads/cords which is about the width of a six strand embroidery thread.

Scissors, awl,
12" ruler, beads of your choice and a phone book or thick catalog if
available [to use when putting holes in each signature or page].
Optional: paper

boards. Glue will be provided as will
needles, a brush for glue, pencil to mark holes, and hemp or waxed linen.
For the inside
cover pieces of the book you may use the Eco printed paper provided or if you

this first book is a sample. If you choose
to make more books in the future you will understand the techniques to create
your own unique books.

Press release
August 15, 2015 Contact: Susanne Nielsen, 813-254-5088
Artist Susanne Nielsen, ECU alumna, exhibits soft sculpture
at Greenville Museum of Art September 2015
Susanne Nielsen, sculptor, painter/mixed media artist, who
completed her graduate studies in Painting with an MFA degree at East Carolina University
(ECU) in Greenville, N.C. in 1989, will be exhibiting her soft sculpture
"Babies like Bunnies”, homage to Nadya Denise Doud-Suleman, at the
Greenville Museum of Art from September 4, 2015.
Susanne is currently completing her doctoral dissertation in
art .She writes art criticism and has been host and producer of her own German
Radio Show, with its focus on the arts. In 2010 she expanded the show worldwide
as a blog and podcast.
Nielsen's works are sculptural and her vessel series is
based the artist's collection of international birth myths. As a Rotarian team
member, for the first time to her native Germany’s East, then as a teamleader
on a monthlong trip to Bangladesh, both fully sponsored cultural and vocational
Rotary Group Study Exchanges, was able to do her research in her field of
art/art history in the countries she visited.
In recent years many new ideas for her sculptures have been
generated by reports of new science and technology, like IVF, a method that has
helped many women to become mothers.
It has also given rise to the conversation about multiple births. Nielsen’s sculpture “Babies like Bunnies” is an homage to Nadya Denise Doud-Suleman who gave birth to octuplets, the highest number of babies born to one women in history, and a result of IVF. While cute like baby bunnies, this event of so many babies born at once, was heavily discussed in the media. Nielsen believes the role of the artist is to hold a mirror to contemporary society.

She develops series that visually, woven, painted, and
stitched into the art, tell stories of this world. Her personal story, recorded
in paintings "Coming to America" or “Childhood” (1950s/60s), reflects
modern society’s mobility and multi-culturalism. A two-time immigrant to the
U.S., Nielsen is an example of many children of immigrant families. She spent
her childhood in France, California, Iceland, and Germany, while her sibling
moved on to Switzerland, and her parents spent eighteen years in Paris. All
these locations became a second home that Nielsen visited in her college years.
he still has ties to Germany, where her university studies
take her several times a year and her family resides.
