As discussed at the last meeting, we are going to do a series of fundraising events to try and rebuild the Guild treasury. Please participate as you are able.WE ARE HAVING A BOOK SALE!
To donate all of your unwanted ART RELATED books and magazines, please bring them to the July 13 meeting. Kim Sherrod and Dana Maley will be selling them starting at 6PM. Prices will vary from 50 cents to $5. All proceeds go back to the Guild. Any unsold books can be picked up at the end of the evening or donated to the free table. Thanks for all your donations.
CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS
As discussed at the last meeting, you can submit up to 4 prototypes for
donated handmade holiday ornaments for sale during the upcoming holiday season. They must sell for under $15 and be juried into the Dunedin Fine Art
Center Christmas Tree Celebration. Please bring your completed ornament to the August 10
meeting so Angelea Carpenter can have it juried for sale. If you cannot make the August meeting, the ornaments will be
juried by Aug. 1, 2015. Contact Angelea Carpenter who is the DFAC Gallery Shop Manager (727-298-3322 ext. 238 or Acarpenter@dfac.org) to get them directly to her.
If chosen, you will have to make one dozen of each ornament by the September TBSDG meeting or deliver them to her at DFAC by appointment
by Oct. 1. The Guild will make 60% of the sale price. If we get enough ornaments, the TBSDG will have their own tree! Our goal is to
make 250 ornaments from several of the prototypes. Cindie would like to see us
exceed that. We will have an ornament assembly party in September, more information will follow. If sufficient ornaments are available, they will be placed at Florida Craftart, through a similar jury process.

- Please bring your felt pieces, completed or not from Leeann Kroetsch's June class for Show and Tell.
- All items left at the free table will be donated to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Department for their children's art program. Donna Isaac will be transporting the items.

Upcoming TBSDG Workshops
July 19, 2015 Encaustic and Fabric Workshop
1pm-4pm
at the Indian Rocks Beach Art Center. Cost is $45. You
will have an opportunity to learn several ways of using encaustic paints on
paper and fabric.
We will explore how to:
- apply encaustic paints with an encaustic iron (see below)
- use a hot fix applicator
- do a wax transfer to fabric
- create an encaustic monotype onto paper or fabric
Supplies:
Tools – Heat Sources:
- Encaustic requires a heat source to melt the wax so it can be applied to create your art. In this workshop we will be using a small, non-steam iron (no holes on the sole plate), a heat applicator and a griddle to melt the wax. Kathleen has irons and griddles, but not enough for everyone to have their own, so we will have to share. If you want to move along and accomplish more, I recommend buying an encaustic iron. You can contact Brenda Ambrosino if you would like to purchase an iron. brenda.fordlove@tampabay.rr.com If you just want to practice the techniques and see what's it all about,just come and share Kathleen's equipment.
- An encaustic iron is a small iron designed to be used with encaustic wax. A small travel iron that does not have holes on the sole plate can also be used as can a Kandi Corp Handi-iron or any other small craft iron. You can use not use any iron that has holes on the bottom.
- You can also use a pancake griddle, flat surface hot plate or an electric frying pan as a heat source. Once you use them for encaustic work you can never use them to cook again, so only bring one if you use it for art purposes only.
- A hot fix applicator is a hand held tool used to apply hot-fix crystals. The tips have universal threads and can be unscrewed to allow other tips. Kathleen has several encaustic tips you can use so, if you have an applicator, please bring it.
- If you have any of the above, please bring it to the workshop. If you are bringing a heat source, please bring an extension cord for each heat source you bring.
Paper/Fabric: Bring an assortment of papers and fabrics to
experiment with. Rice paper, watercolor,
acrylic, anything you have. Keep the size to no bigger than 12"x12"
Remember as always, wear old clothes or bring an apron. The wax is hard to get of clothes and will leave a stain.

August 16…bohemiannie! bag, with Annie Wade
10am to 5pm
at Indian Rocks Beach Art Center. The cost is $ 35.00. You will be making a one-of-a-kind
bag that can be used as a purse, tote, carry-on, diaper bag, overnight bag,
etc, etc, out of fabrics that you surface design at home. (Or not). We will
begin by machine quilting your fabric and then construct it to tailor fit your
size, style and/or needs. You will then embellish your bag with jewelry,
buttons, baubles, bangles or beads. This is an awesome piece of wearable art!
The supply list will be provided
along with the bohemiannie! bag pattern once you sign up and pay for the
workshop. This
workshop will take all day...so please come at 10am and plan to stay until 5pm.
Don't forget your lunch! If you want to, we can do a pot luck and eat whatever
shows up.

volunteers to Docent the show until August 16 if you have some time to give guided tours of our work.

Our next show is at the Clearwater Downtown Library in both Galleries. We
will put up the show at the beginning of January. Our Show committee will
meet in July and arrange all of the specifics. Please consider joining
the show committee. Date of the next show committee meeting is to be announced.

Aida Sheets sent in the following that she felt everyone should see.
Janet Echelman creates giant soft outdoor sculptures. After Marlene returned from In*ter*face, the 2013 International Surface Design Conference in San Antonio, she talked at one of our meetings about how awesome Janet’s sculptures are. So, she found that Janet has produced a very inspirational TED Talk on the idea of taking imagination seriously. Janet explains her journey producing her sculptures, and how she never says ‘no' to her imagination even though the way may not be clear. course at John Campbell Folk School. While instructing she was

Would you like a vacation? Grab a friend or two and visit funky, friendly Gulfport. Gulfport’s slogan is “Help keep Gulfport weird”. There are a number of great lunch places such as Pia’s, Habana Café and Mangia. A visit to Gulfport is like a trip to Key West without the drive. Plan an afternoon and include a visit to a great fabric shop called Fabric Smart that specializes in 100% cotton Novelty fabric “New Rare and Out of Print”. They are located two blocks from FAB Fiber.
The BIG news is that FAB Fiber recently merged with the former “Stitchworm Shop” and now carries their entire inventory. Former Stitchworm owner, Debbie Goff, is at the shop every Saturday from 10-4. She is an excellent teacher. 5401 Gulfport Blvd 33707 FAB Fiber now carries Frabjous Fiber which is simply FRABJOUS as well as Vickie Bennett’s wonderful merino for felting. If you are looking for something different come learn to weave on a Cricket Loom. We will be having a weaving show in September. If you already weave we would love to include your work. Our current show is the art of Hermann Trappman who specializes in Native Florida Indian scenes. He is featured through July. In August we will have a show featuring the whimsical work of Jennifer Kosharick.

the Guild is to increase community awareness of surface design and its value in
our lives while offering educational and experimental venues, thus supporting
individual artistic creativity while promoting an attitude of mutual respect
and exchange in all areas of surface design.

Surface Design Guild is open to anyone with an interest in surface design of
