To the
Membership,
We are
such a unique and diverse group. Each one of us a need to create our own style
of art. The coolness of TBSDG is that we never have to do it alone. We support,
inspire and include each other. So many members have told me, no matter what
their level of skills, they have felt so welcome in our Guild. There are so
many opportunities for each of us from classes, shows, teaching, demonstrating,
community service and administration. We each can develop in our own way. We
find inner value of each artist, share our knowledge and expand our creativity.
Mostly, we are here to just have fun. Cindie Townley
Dana Maley gives us a quote for the month:
Editors note: Many members feedback have resulted in a slightly adjusted format for SHOW-N-TELL
In order that all members be able to share their work during Show-N-Tell, please limit your pieces to 2 or 3, and limit your discussion to 2-3 minutes total. This will allow everyone to have a chance to share while people are still listening attentively. Also, be polite and listen attentively and take outside discussions outside the room. Eliminate the undercurrent of discussion that occurs and is sometimes very rude to the speaker (and not just during show-n- tell!!!). If there is time, we will go around a second time. Please reserve any discussion of classes or shows for announcements at the end of the meeting.
“When we
look at art we are looking for ourselves.”

From Marlene Glickman: Fabric
Valentines That Can Become Coasters, Mug Rugs or Greeting Cards
Make your own fabric. Grab pink, red, orange and purple fabrics, any little bits and pieces and collage them on a background fabric, even white muslin. Free motion sew the pieces onto the background fabric using any color of thread you like (use a different color of thread in the bobbin for contrast). For heart shapes you can stitch hearts into while doing free motion or put fusing on shiny fabric and cut out hearts and add. Use both the positive and negative shapes you have cut and fuse then stitch them to the collaged patchwork fabric. Put fusible on the backside of the whole piece of valentine fabric and cut them up into cards. If you want more finished edges, you can stitch all around the edges or cover with bias tape. To turn into a greeting card, fuse to cardstock and pop into an envelope. If you want a mug rug or coaster, fuse a backing on each card, and stitch some more to keep it in place. Have fun!!!!
Sara King says:
Thanks to everyone who took fabric to cut into 5 1/2" strips for quilts for kids in foster care. I will be working on them until May, so there is still time to take my fabric and cut. I will have more at the meeting. Sara King 507-398-2022
From Brenda Schlecter:
Do you want to dye fabric but don't want to mess up your home? Do you need a big table to lay something out on? Do you feel like a day out with others but you also want to get some artwork done? Come play or work in my studio.I am finding that while I love my space , I also really like company as well. Soooooo... I am opening my studio on Mondays for visitors to come and do your own thing. You can dye in my kitchen/ dye studio if you have non toxic dyes, or outside in my screened in patio if you are working with toxic ones. Or lay out work that needs to spread out on one of my big tables. Bring your machine and sew, or paint, etc. There is loads of room to spread out and do some parallel play. I will do my own thing, but we can take a break and talk, or put on some music and do some wild woman dancing to shake up work stressed muscles. And if you come for the day there is a great little restaurant across the street for pizza or salads.Just call me at 516-987-1799 to let me know when you plan to come. I am usually there by 10 AM and stay until 3 ish.

Geoffrey Gorman,Creatures of Curiosity
This exhibition of “phantasmagorical” animals is a 10-year survey of Santa Fe-based artist Geoffrey Gorman’s work. Materials used to construct his sculptures include weathered cedar sticks, bailing wire, old cloth, tin cans and bicycle parts. Gorman’s animals seem alive and energized with a strange kind of dignity, self-awareness and alertness usually found only in living animals.

February 14-16 - Kim Sherrod/Cut Up Your Closet II; Learn to repurpose items in your closet or from thrift stores to make a spectacular new dress or skirt. Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the IRBAC. Monday the class will meet at Jay’s Fabrics from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. $75 covers all three days including art center fees. There is a maximum of 15 people for this class.
March 15 - Brenda Ambrosino - Rusty Treasurers.
We don't know why rust and patina are so appealing but they are! In this class you will learn the metal surfacing techniques you'll need to take an ordinary piece of chipboard and turn it into a beautiful piece of rusty paper or an unfinished box and turn it into a found treasure. Using surfacers and patinas that is exactly what you will be creating in this class. Along with encaustic waxes, stamps, papers, shells, mica, fibers, inks and more you will create a beautiful card suitable for framing and a precious little box to store some little treasures. All supplies are included. Brenda will be at the March meeting with samples. The cost is $55 ($45 plus $10 for IRBAC). The time is 1-5PM.
April 19 - Gail Crotty - Coloring with Crayons. This method comes from "Creative Quilts From Your Crayon Box:Melt-N-Blend Meets Fusible Applique by Terri Linn Kygar.
This workshop will focus on a different way to create "art" on your quilt or on any fabric by using melted crayons to paint on fabric. Gail uses the method to create "appliques" for placement on quilts, but the finished project could be easily used to adorn a card, book cover, etc. The colors and shading with the Crayola crayons will surprise you as you can create anything you can draw or copy. You will also be surprised by what you use for your "paintbrush" as well as other ways(Pigma Pens, Prismacolor pencils and Faber-Castell Gelatos) to add color and texture to the drawings. We will have a mini demo of this technique at the February business meeting. Workshop fee will be $15, $10 for the use of facility and a $5 supply fee. A supply list will be available at the March business meeting. The time is 1-4pm.
May 17th - Goatfeathers Studio presents Charm School
This workshop will focus on the making of twelve unique mixed media charms. Each charm is designed to explore a technique or use of material or medium. In addition, the workshop will show how common household items can be turned into fabulous miniature embellishments to be used in the making of unique one-of-a-kind jewelry.
Each participant is asked to bring one odd item from their jewelry box that no longer has a mate such as a single pair of earrings or small pendant. A small trunk show, ahem, jewelry box show will also be presented by Goatfeathers resident fiber artists Celeste Beck and Merri McKenzie. Cost is $60. The workshop is 10:00AM-2:30 PM. Please pack a lunch or plan to pick up a quick lunch in the area.
Mini-Workshops
Mini-workshops are held as part of our regular meeting. Last month, Alana Hennesy lead a quick painting demo and talk about the intuitive process of art-making. See some photos of the process, below. For our February Meeting, Gail Crotty will show us a glimpse of her March workshop, demonstrating how to paint/color a quilt with melted crayons and prismacolor pencils.
